24 Oct

Hey all!

After taking a week off to move, I’m back to The Friday 56 hosted by Freda on Freda’s Voice. Head on over there and check out the other participating blogs. The community was ridiculously supportive last time and I’m excited to participate again.

Friday 56

The way this meme works is pretty simple. If you want to join in, head over to Freda’s blog and add your link.

Rules:
*Grab a book, any book (I grab the one I’m currently reading)
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grab you.
*Post it.

As I’m in a bit of a reading slump, I’ve decided to use my Read Along With Me #2 book, The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar.

“Serabi has a hajaar things to do more important than taking a shameless girl to an abortion doctor.”

What a sentence! I love how it encapsulates a big struggle in this book (which is no spoiler as it’s on the first page), Maya’s pregnancy. It also addresses that Bhima (the speaker here) feels about Serabi, her employer and not-quite-friend. And it has some of the wonderfully authentic dialogue that Umrigar has dispersed in her characters. It’s a great representation of a book I’m really enjoying.

I’m sorry to have missed my second week at this new meme. I hope to be more consistent going forward because this is such a great community!

Until next time, write on.

You can follow me on Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. I’m available via email at SamAStevensWriter@gmail.com. And as always, feel free to leave a comment!

I love how well Bhima is portrayed, you can always feel her frustrations with the things that make her irk.

I bet you’re so revealed to have moving process behind you, are you all settled and unpacked at home?

Unpacked is a relative term. I’ll be working on it tonight to some audio. We’re good with most everything except the second bedroom. It’s our black hole of unpacked boxes right now, haha.

Oh yay! At least you have some audio to keep you from feeling the need to unpack 🙂 I’m really enjoying my audiobook selection right now; especially since it’s fall, which means, crochet season is here! 😀

I love learning new words, in this case “hajaar.” Sounds like an intriguing story.

The author does a great job of pulling in the common language of the area. There are a lot of new words to me in this book but the context always helps me figure out what it means.

Ugh, reading slumps are the worst and for me the only way to get through them is time. You’re right, this excerpt is very heavy in content and characterization. I hope you get over your slump soon. Have a lovely weekend 🙂

Thank you! I’m down to 1.5 chapters in the slow read. I’m hoping for a pick-up this weekend. Have a good one!

To you as well! I’m not 100% sure what the character is saying some times, but the context the author gives is usually a pretty good clue. Enjoy your weekend!
