Welcome to another edition of The Friday 56 hosted by Freda on Freda’s Voice. Head on over there and check out the other participating blogs. The community has been really great and I’m excited to jump in!

Friday 56

The way this meme works is pretty simple. If you want to join in, head over to Freda’s blog and add your link.

Rules:
*Grab a book, any book (I grab the one I’m currently reading)
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grab you.
*Post it.

I just started a new title, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri and I’m not even on page 56 yet. I really hope reading this page doesn’t give too much away! Here’s the quote I chose:

His parents have told him that at school, instead of being called Gogol, he will be called by a new name, a good name, which his parents have finally decided on, just in time for him to begin his formal education.

I don’t think this gives away too much because I think this will be a major sticking point in the novel. I’m only as far as Gogol’s birth but I figured that he would be the title character, the namesake. I’m curious what the reason for a name change is. This book has come highly recommended and I’m pumped to keep reading.

Until next time, write on.

That is a book I’ve got to read some day. And that is a very interesting quote that makes me even more interested in it. Great choice!

It must have been difficult for the character to change his name, especially since the name he was accustomed to wasn’t a “good” one! I’m curious about why his parents wanted to change it and wondering what effect that has on Gogol. This sounds like a good story.

I’m still figuring out why they want to change his name. My impression now is that in the Indian culture (Gogol and his parents are Indian immigrants to America) a name can be chosen later in life. I think that’s really interesting because a name is so stressed in America.
      Happy Reading!

You’re reading another novel revolving around the Indian Culture; wouldn’t it be fun if you, me and Ashlee could take a quick trip to India? . . .well, maybe, I’m terrified of flying 😛

Have you discovered what the name Gogol means? I’m interested in finding out what’s behind the name and why they are insistent on changing it.

I would love a quick trip to India! This happened purley by coincidence since this book is a book club selection for the month. My husband was laughing at all the books I have on my shelf about American culture and how I could choose the only two about Indian culture to read at the same time. No matter. I would love a quick trip to India! That would be so fun to see these books come alive for us. I’d be down, haha.

I haven’t found out what the name means yet. I think I’m just about to discover that, but this weekend is dedicated to writing and I’m not sure how much time I’ll have for reading, unfortunately. I hope to find out soon!

I think it was the name of an author the father liked, but I haven’t been able to read to page 56 yet to find out! I’m still just starting the book but I hope to find out soon.

Now that you said author, that makes sense. I do recall an author named Gogol. Not sure I have read anything by him though.
