NaNoWriMo: My Day 4

 

I actually wrote today! It was a struggle, let me tell you. I normally work a half day on Friday because I put in 9+ hours Monday through Thursday. It’s worth it when I can leave at 11 on Friday! But today, I had to work until five and then pull my computer out for another hour when I got home. Needless to say, it wasn’t my ideal day and I was sick of screens.

So I had to find another way to motivate myself. What better way is there than a girl’s best friend: CHOCOLATE! I made brownies. And while they were in the oven, my bootie was glued to the couch and I was writing. I got to page 18 (from the second draft, a total of 119 pages) and I’m up to 52188 words (from 52962). I say ‘up to’ because I cut two whole pages and I’ve been beefing it back up by adding that detail back in later in the plot.

I learned that I’m not as good at ‘show, don’t tell’ as I thought. Or I wasn’t when I wrote this first draft, which I finished in the summer of 2013. I’d like to think I’ve grown since then. I think this time through will be taking a lot out and adding some things to beef up characters and define my motivation better. It will likely come out with poor transitions between scenes, but it will be tighter, I’m sure of that. I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback from people I trust and I’m armed with a list of ideas. This NaNo is mine!

While the brownies cooked and cooled, I got 1 hour in. That counts for the half hour I missed yesterday and what I should have done today. I’ll do another half hour tomorrow. For now, I’m watching 30 Rock and eating brownies.
