Too Many Books?

22 Mar

I rarely feel this way, but I’m starting to feel like I’m reading too many books.

I usually keep it to three books, one print, one audio, and one digital. Recently, I’ve tried to do two audiobooks with one in my car on CD because there are audiobooks I can’t find digitally. Honestly, it’s not my favorite and I’m going to try to get through books only available on CD quickly so I can return to doing them on my phone as much as possible. There’s an extra audiobook in my life right now for that reason.

Every year, I try to read a book in Spanish. I try to start it as close to January 1 as possible and finish as soon as I’m able to. Because they take me a long time to read, I often have to take a break from them before I finish to read a book club selection before the meeting date. While I’m getting close to finishing my Spanish read for the year, I have to put it aside for a book club right now. That gave me an extra print book in my life.

The digital book I’m trying to read is really long and I’ve lost the library hold on it before. Because I didn’t want to be caught with no book to read, I started another. However, when the long book became available again, I got back to it and put the second book aside. I’m about to lose the hold on the long one again so it will be back to the second book. There’s the final extra book in my life right now.

So there are three extra books, doubling my ideal number of three all the way to six. The issue is also that I’ve got a lot of similar genres going on. Both ebooks, one print, and one audio are contemporary fiction and the remaining two are fantasy. I usually have at least one historical fiction book going on which gives me more variety of settings, but no such luck now.

It’s frustrating because I feel like I’m not making progress on any of them. I haven’t finished a book since February 22nd, a month ago. I’m three books behind schedule for my Goodreads challenge! I know I’ll go through a week of finishing a ton of books, but it’s hard to see when that date will come.

Does anyone else read like me? Has anyone else felt this discouragement?

Until next time, write on.

If tend to read one digital and one physical – preferably one fiction, one non-fiction. And sometimes an audio book as well. At the moment I am reading one physical and one audio book. About to add in a digital 🙂 I go a bit mental if I juggling more than that!

That does sound a little crazy! 🙂 I don’t listen to audiobooks often so I’ll usually just read one or two books at a time. If I’m reading a long book, I like to read short stories in between for a break. I get confused easily so it helps if the books are completely different. That’s great that you read a book in Spanish every year. Have you tried doing that through an audiobook? I love listening to Italian language CDs – thanks for reminding me that I need to start doing that again!

Hm, I hadn’t thought of that! I’m afraid I’d tune out too easily and miss large chunks of the story. Does that happen to you? Happy reading!

I’ve only listened to the Italian language ones where you have to repeat everything so that keeps me from tuning out or falling asleep. 🙂

I’m a bookaholic! Juggling reading and writing can be a challenge sometimes. I often read several books at once, usually different genres like you. If there is one that is ‘time sensitive’, I give that one priority. I try to read at least one full chapter at a time (sometimes it’s hard because some chapters are so long!). If I’m feeling overwhelmed with books, I simply put one on the shelf until I can get back to it. Of course, I always have to make time for writing that all important review to leave for the author on the book I finished reading.
    Best wishes to you.

Thanks. I’m always conscious of reviews as well. Not finishing a book has impacted my blog a bit because o have to talk about something else! I try to stop mid chapter because I find it easier to pick up again. Happy reading!

Yes!! It happens to me sometimes. Right now I’m doing four, one e-book, 2 paperbacks and an audiobook. It does feel like my progress is slow when I read this many books at one time. But it’s my own fault. I’m too excited to wait to start my next book sometimes so I wind up reading a few at a time. My usual is two, my limit, three. I’ve definitely overdone it. But, I’m getting close to the end with one of them finally. ( :

I’m finally getting to the end of mine as well. It feels so good to be wrapping a few of them up! I’ve been dying to finish and have been reading instead of doing homework for the past few days. This is not a good sign haha. Happy reading!

I try to do one audio book and one ebook at a time but I can’t even do that. I gave up on audio books because They put me to sleep before I even know what’s going on. Best of luck sorting your reading out! 6 books sounds extremely stressful!

I recently had to put the brakes on and whittle myself down to maybe two books at a time, because even with a good memory, things were falling by the wayside for far too long! Now I’m trying to do the same with the list of series I’m reading, but urk, everything seems to be part of a series!

I’m not a big fan of series and it is hard to stay away from them. Good luck and happy reading!
