Currently reading: I’m enjoying Mister Monkey by Francine Prose and I think I’ll have it finished by next week. The audiobook is well done and I’ve started doing my long runs so I get through audiobooks on my phone fairly quickly. I like finding the connections between the plot lines and I’ve had fun guessing who the next narrator will be.
I’m not too far into The World’s Strongest Librarian by Josh Hanagarne but it’s a joy so far. Hanagarne is able to make fun of himself and his childhood and at the same time convey how hard it is to live with Tourette’s. I’m enjoying the tone he picked for the book and I’m excited to keep reading.
My next ebook is The Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver. I added it to my list after I enjoyed another Shriver book. I’m a bit too early in this one to tell how I feel about it and I’m not reading it quickly so expect this one to linger here for a while.
Over the weekend, I started a new physical book with The Sellout by Paul Beatty. I almost read this about a year ago but was going to miss the book club meeting so I decided not to read it and now I get a second chance! Again, early in, but so far soon good!
Recently finished: I was able to wrap up An Abundance of Katherines by John Green late last week. It’s not my favorite Green by any means, but it was still enjoyable. I’ll have a review up next week so I can go into some more detail on it.
I sped through What I Know Now: Letters to My Younger Self by Ellyn Spragins. The letters were all really short so I’d binge-read five or so at a time and got through the book really fast. I’ll have a review for this one up next week, also. I’m catching up on reviews!
A few reviews as well! I posted about my feelings on Drop Dead Healthy by A.J. Jacobs last Thursday. I love this author and I gave him a glowing review. He always makes me laugh. I gave him 5 out of 5 Stars.
I also wrote about The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro earlier this week. I’ve liked Ishiguro in the past, but this book was not for me. Please check out my review for more details, but still read Never Let Me Go! I gave the book 2 out of 5 stars.
Reading Next: I’m trying to keep ahead of my book club picks so I can lazily pick up my own books. The next one I’ll grab will be Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson. I’m worried the audiobook I have is abridged because it’s only 2 hours and 30 minutes long! If you’ve read this before, does that seem right? It looks like the book is about 200 pages so I’m surprised it would be so short.

That does sound quite short! I usually estimate about 40-50 pages per hour of audio book, give or take… There’s nothing in the description about it being abridged?

I am with you! People seem to love his books but I just haven’t read one yet that I loved. Anyone have a favorite? Maybe I missed it….

I watched TFIoS and thought it was okay. i read the book, it was also just Okay. then I read Paper Towns and I got depressed. i really didn’t like it. lol.

I’m not a big fan of Paper Towns. I didn’t see what was so great about Margo and it didn’t feel like it had an ending to me.

The ending is what threw me off too. It’s like nonsense and everything happened turned to nothing.

Depression has been my main take-away. He’s a bit like Nicholas Sparks but for teens with cancer and other issues.

Katherines didn’t deal with depression in any way. It talked about being happy with who you are instead of what you think you should be. It was a good message, just not a great ending or premise in my opinion.

Thanks for that Sam! There are so many great books out there that sometimes when an author turns me off I just stop reading them which means I miss out on a fair number of good ones. (I didn’t like Eleanor and Park for example but have loved everything else by Rainbow Rowell). So, I appreciate other readers highlighting the differences in one author’s books. Thank you!

Yeah maybe that’s why I couldn’t love them… I do read Sparks’ books but teens issues I’m not particularly fond of. Besides some of them are silly and tropey. I’m not realy that much into YA contemporary.

Yes I have read Never Let Me Go. Beautifully written but, I thought it was very chilling. I didn’t know what it was about before I read it and I was both shocked and horrified by it.

I definitely liked Never Let Me Go more than The Buried Giant as well. I had trouble emotionally connecting with the characters in the latter; the memory element of the plot made it impossible for me. I enjoyed your review 🙂

I know the pleasure of feeling you’re all caught up with reviews as I’m in that happy state at the moment! However, if I know anything, it won’t be long before they’re stacking up again… I read your review of The Buried Giant and concluded that, although I loved The Remains of the Day, I should probably give this one a miss and go for your recommendation of Never Let Me Go.

I’m sorry The Buried Giant was not a favorite; it definitely different. Ishiguro’s writing style is beautiful, but it didn’t quite transfer that well to fantasy. I’m not sure what he was trying to do. Never Let Me Go is one of my favorites and a book that I often teach in my university Interpreting Literature class. You’re current reads sound fascinating! I think he was trying too hard to talk about Alzheimer’s and old age that he dropped the story. I wish every book could be as good as Never Let Me Go! Happy reading.

I agree. I have a fellow professor who insists on teaching The Buried Giant in his Interpreting Literature class and thinks it is Ishiguro’s best work next to The Remain’s of the Day; we’ve discussed the book because I’ve been very interested in why he thinks that, etc; however, I still can’t agree. To each their own, which is why books are so wonderful! But yes, if all books were as great as Never Let Me Go, then that would be great! You too!

The Jodi Picoult book sound good. My link today is My thanks to Overdrive and Meridian Library for my copy. Anne Perry did not disappoint in the 23rd book on the William Monk series, it as good as all her books. The book covers family secrets, the horror of war, mob violence and deceit of an individual.
Monk’s current case is the vicious death of Hungarian living in London. Scuff is learning to be a doctor and he meets an army surgeon, Fritz who is living in the area. Fritz is an old friend of Hester. She believed that he died in the war. She had found a body as we’re saving the living. This surgeon has blackouts with memories of the Crimean battlefields. As more similar deaths occur in the Hungarian community tensions escalate as Monk does not make an arrest. Fritz is found on the streets covered in blood and the Hungarians are convinced he is the killer. Mob violence takes over and Monk is forced to arrest Fritz for the murder. Hester is determined to save him from the gallows. Will she succeed? I HIGHLY recommend this book and series.
