This may seem like an odd topic but I’m running short on things to post about this week.
I’m a member of several groups and as a result, I get magazines from them once a quarter. It’s only four total and all with topics I’m very interested in. My problem is that I don’t read them.
I think I’m so driven by this blog and Goodreads that I neglect them. I want to finish a book and post a review. I’m not going to post anything about a really interesting article in Swimmer magazine about correcting my backstroke head position (seriously, great article). I could have spent those 10 minutes reading more of Bel Canto and finishing the book so I can move on to a book club pick.
Does anyone else have a pile of magazines built up? How do you decide on the time you’ll spend reading them versus a book? Should I work on correcting my backstroke head position?
Until next time, write on.
You can follow me on Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. I’m available via email at SamAStevensWriter@gmail.com. And as always, feel free to leave a comment!
I end up not reading my magazines too. I’m not sure why but I never pick them up and they all go to recycling unread, sometimes unopened. Such a waste 😦 What worked for me for a while was to immediately flip to the table of contents and mark articles that I thought I would enjoy or benefit from reading. Then I scheduled myself to read one article every day. That worked for a while. Then I was sick and got behind and tossed out the whole lot and haven’t started again. I’m just glad I’m not paying for the ones I’m getting. That might be the only way to have me make use of them though.

I like the idea of reading one per day. I’d tried using them for study breaks but it wasn’t working. Thankfully I’m not paying for these either haha. Happy reading!

I used to, but I finally got tired of them piling up and me not reading them. I think that like anything you have to make the time for them. What makes it easier is it usually only takes a few minutes to read an article so it’d be easier to set aside some time. Theoretically anyway. 🙂

It’s always in theory haha. I canceled the one I paid for years ago so at least it’s not a waste of money. Happy reading!

Unless I can find a magazine online via overdrive or some other online tool, I don’t read them. I find it odd that in the day of digital resources more magazines are not putting their information online. If there are things I want to know about, your article on swimming for example, I will search out that information online. While I love the feel of “real” books, I prefer all other information to be available online. It saves the trees and is easier to clean. 😉

Great point. I’d never looked for these magazines online. I think I’d skip reading them if the were online only, though. Their physical presence makes me feel guilty haha. Happy reading!

I have never really read magazines so this has never been a problem for me. If I’m interested in something I tend to Google and most of the time I get whatever I need there.
You probably should correct your backstroke head position. Not something I’ve given much thought to (I had coaches to help with that stuff) but I imagine it will make a big difference 😂

Haha thank you! The article had some good drills to help so I’ll give it a try. Happy reading and swimming!

I don’t buy magazines. I have always preferred reading a book.

I stopped paying for them a few years ago but I still get some from my alma mater and several athletic groups I belong to. One of those ‘member benefits’ that no one uses I suspect. Happy reading!

Yes! I’ve a digital literary magazine piling up on my iPad. I dread to see how many issues there are now!

Oh geeze. I think a digital pile would be too easy to ignore. Mine would be infinite haha. Happy reading!

I have a subscription to London Review of Books and I am so far behind with reading them!

I gave up my one paid subscription. It sounds like that’s a subscription that makes your TBR longer. That leads to more problems haha. Happy reading!

It was a gift so I don’t mind so much but it does take up a lot of reading time!

Yes I do!! I’m glad I’m not the only one with this problem. A huge stack that I’ve never taken out of the plastic for the same reason as you, I want to read my books and review them! I’ll get around to one here or there, but they do pile up. Most are free subscriptions. Sometimes I like to read them in the car when my husband is driving. I’ll have to try to get him to take me on a long trip so I can thumb through them while talking to him. 😂

I usually find time while I’m waiting for my husband to be ready to leave haha. Clearly he’s been running on time lately. Happy reading!

I don’t really read magazines; the only one I have a modicum of interest reading is a special magazine about Stephen King my father got me for Christmas last year, but I’ve only skimmed it.
What you’re describing is kind of like any other hobby that can distract from reading, I feel. I play a lot of video games. If I spent all of the time I play reading I can only imagine how many more books I’d finish. However, I’d then feel like I’m missing out on something else I enjoy, and might even grow to resent my drive to read all the time. I don’t rigidly separate the two into different slots of time in my life, but I make an effort to allow time for both so neither interest feel like they’re suffering.

That’s a great comparison. I have similar issues with running and watching a TV show I like. I love reading, but I can’t do it all the time. It’s all about balance. Happy reading!

I do too! I signed up for a few free magazine subscriptions through my phone company and I read them the first couple months but now there’s just a huge pile, all unread! I can’t fit them into my reading schedule.

The struggle is real haha. I think they’re good if you’re going somewhere where you’ll have time to read and want to bring a magazine and then recycle it. It would free up space for sure! Happy reading.
