Currently reading: I struggled to read some of Becoming Madame Mao by Anchee Min this week. It’s not uninteresting, it’s just my lunch book and slow going because of that. I’ll get through it, no worries.
I’m about a third of the way through A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin. With the show now over, I’m getting ravenous to get more out of the world. I want to be caught up when Martin finally releases the next book. I guess I’m hoping for a different ending.
I got through a chunk of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers on a flight this past weekend. Yes, I’m traveling again. I’m going to use it to my advantage and get through as many books as possible!
I’m making good progress on Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. He’s a great storyteller and I’m loving all the stories of his childhood and growing up in South Africa. I guess my education is seriously lacking when it comes to apartheid so I’m learning a lot.
Recently finished: Nothing new finished this week. It was a slow week of progress, I guess. I’m optimistic Noah will be here next week.
I had two reviews go up this week! The first was for Hawkes Harbor by S.E. Hinton. It wasn’t one I particularly enjoyed if I’m being honest. I really wanted to like it, but I couldn’t. I gave it Two out of Five Stars.
The second was The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing by Mira Jacob. This one was really fun and I enjoyed the story a lot more than I thought I would. The story was sufficiently complicated to keep me going and I liked the dual timelines. I gave it Four out of Five Stars.
Reading Next: I’m still waiting on Writing Fiction for Dummies by Randy Ingermanson to come in from the library. I’m sure it will be here just when I’m not ready for it. Life always happens that way, doesn’t it? I should expect it by now.

The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing certainly does sound fun. I love the title too. I don’t know how many books you have to got get through before the new release by George RR Martin but they are big books, so good luck. I’ve never actually watched Game of Thrones but now that it’s finished I’m going to try and get round to reading some of the books before starting the tv show. Looking forward to it but also very intimidated by the size of the books!

It’s a fun adventure! I read the first book, started the show, and told myself I’d go back and forth but the show was great and I pushed on with it before getting back to the books. Happy reading!

I’m intrigued by Born a Crime. I somehow was under the impression that it was jokey, but you make it sound more substantial than that.
I’ve got another biography (I’ve been on a bio kick lately) and an old-school political thriller in a contemporary setting.

There are parts where he talks about languages in South Africa and reads parts in those languages and translates them to English. It’s cool to hear.

That sounds really neat! I love Xhosa (don’t know if that’s in there) and hearing Afrikaans makes me laugh. I have a South African Indian friend, so his accent is interesting, and he speaks a bit of Afrikaans.

I really enjoyed Trevor Noah’s book and I felt the same apartheid – I thought I understood but I had really never considered the personal implications of the whole mess. The book is so funny and I could really hear his voice while I read it. Have a wonderful week!

One of these days, ONE. OF. THESE. DAYS., I’ll get to Trevor Noah’s book. I’ve been meaning to read this for ages. I’ve read one book in the past few years on apartheid, but I could definitely use more education on the topic. I’m glad you’re enjoying his book; I’ve heard so many good things about it!

The “Dummies” series is the best, but you NEED to own the books, not check them out.
Last summer I had an “Everything Jane Austin” good time when my book club read Persuasion, a biography, all of Wikipedia (and the places it led) and The Dummies version of Everything Jane Austin. It was encyclopediac about Austin (covering her times, the fashion, food, ettiquette,} ANYTHING you wanted to (or didn’t even need to) know about Jane Austin was there. I wrote tons of notes, copied pages and pages, etc and came away from my three weeks saturation of Jane Austin feeling like I had taken a fun literature course on her alone. I was a big fan of The Daily Show when Jon Stewart was host, so I’ve always been curious about Noah’s book. I haven’t gotten back into the show since he became the new host though. The insight into apartheid has always been a draw nonetheless. Guess that means I just can’t decide whether or not to pick it up. Happy reading!

A friend of mine gave me a copy of Born a Crime because she knows that I’m already a Trevor Noah fan. She said it was really good but, as a person from South Africa, it was really hard to read. Brought back a lot of bad memories. I’m looking forward to reading it myself though.

Eeek, Dave Eggers! I didn’t like my first experience with his work ‘The Circle’. Did you like it?
However, Trevor Noah’s book sounds interesting. You’re a many-books-at-one-time reader, too?! Hahaha, sometimes it can get a little messy. Especially when writing reviews.

I read The Circle and liked it. I also like this one so far, but it’s very different. Each of his books are very unique!
