Life of a NaNoWriMo Rebel: Week 4

1 Dec

It’s over! Congratulations to everyone who participated in any capacity; you’ve added words even if it’s not 50,000 of them. My rebellious nature continued and here’s what I’ve got:

Day 24: Nothing

Day 25: 1 hour (write-in)

Day 26: Nothing

Day 27: 1 hour

Day 28: Nothing

Day 29: Nothing

Day 30: 1.5 hours

Again, spotty but good enough! I was in California visiting family over Thanksgiving so all my writing was done on the plane there and back. Kudos to my husband for dealing with my elbows in his lap.

It’s not a full NaNo and this is bothering me, but at the same time I’m fine with it. I got about 32,000 words which is huge! And this draft feels a lot more flushed out than my previous one did. I’ve been able to add scenes, smooth character progression, and I’ll be changing the ending so things are about to go crazy!

I’m really proud of this and I’m not going to call myself a NaNo Winner per say, but I met my goal (on average) for every day this month. I’m really excited about this and I’m hoping I can make writing time a more regular part of my schedule throughout the year. I’ve got a lot in my head I’m dying to get out to share with the world.

How was your NaNo? How many words did you get?

Until next time, write on.

Life of a NaNoWriMo Rebel: Week 3

24 Nov

‘Twas the week before Thanksgiving and all over the world, the NaNo-ers were scurrying to 40K words. It’s about time for everyone to be in a huge rush to finish as much as possible before Thanksgiving. I know I am! I’ll be taking my laptop with me to visit family in California, but I still want to stay ahead. Here’s how it’s been going.

Day 17: Nothing

Day 18: 1 hour

Day 19: 30 minutes

Day 20: Nothing (Hunger Games movie!)

Day 21: Nothing

Day 22: 1.5 hours

Day 23: 30 minutes

Yes, a little spotty. I’ve been lagging a bit in my school work so this has taken a bit of a back seat to school so that I can be caught up before leaving town. My strategy has been to make up for days missed, but not to let myself ‘get ahead’ of time I will do in the future. I’m not sure this makes sense. Let’s say on Wednesday I did 1 hour even though I wasn’t behind. I can’t apply the extra 30 minutes to Thursday. It’s to make myself establish a habit more. I think it’s going okay.

If I were keeping a NaNo word count, I would fail. I started with 7K words or so and I’m now just over 30K which means I cheated and I’m behind. But I’m using time spent doing research and time looking through notes because that’s part of the editing process that I didn’t do much about when Ii wrote the first time. I feel like I’m making huge progress and I’m starting to like my book a bit more. I talked to my writing group about this book and it’s the type of book I would read, but it’s not what I want to write. I want to say something in the books I write, mainly toward a YA audience and it’s not the same message I want to receive in a book I read. It puts me in a weird place now where I’m trying to write something I’d like to read and struggling with it. Ugh.

How’s your NaNo? Are you traditional or a rebel like me? I hope you’re enjoying the process as much as I am!

Until next time, write on.

Life of a NaNoWriMo Rebel: Week 2

17 Nov

To all the others slaving away at NaNo, happy half way! It’s hard for me to measure progress by word count by I know today is a little over 28K for most of you. I’m counting hours still. And it’s been okay. I won’t lie and say it’s going well, but it’s been alright.

Day 10: 30 minutes

Day 11: 30 minutes

Day 12: Nothing

Day 13: Nothing

Day 14: 1 hour

Day 15: 3 hours (more on this later)

Day 16: Nothing

I’m a little inconsistent. I’ll freely admit to that. I like using an hour at a time if I can, but I’ll take the 30 minutes when I can. I had Friday off from work and did my editing between other chores around the house. Saturday was awesome because I went to the Detroit area Midway Madness. We met at a library and had a potluck writing frenzy. It started at 12:30 but I didn’t get there until 4 and the event went till 7. The library let us stay after they closed at 5, which is a huge kudos to this group and how well they’re received by the community. I was able to add over 4,000 words to my manuscript and even won a word wars for a section I was adding completely new. I sat through 4 or 5 word wars (they do them for 20 minutes or more) but only participated in two because I didn’t want to rush editing. In total, I’m up to 21,941 words, but I had about 5K of those when I started. I’m counting this week as a huge win, even if I’m not writing every day.

As far as establishing a habit, I think I’m on my way. I want this to be something I can continue to do after NaNo is over and not making it a stressful thing I do every day helps that. I still go to movies. I still go to book club and even dinner with my Spanish conversation group. But on nights off, I write. I’m going to write ins (another on Tuesday this week) and I’m enjoying the community. I’ve got two new NaNo stickers for my computer (huge win!) and I’m reconnecting with writers. It’s been a really great experience and I can’t wait to (hopefully) fully participate in NaNo next year.

How’s your NaNo? Are you traditional or a rebel like me? I hope you’re enjoying the process as much as I am!

Until next time, write on.

Life of a NaNoWriMo Rebel: Week 1

10 Nov

Oh the hard life of a rebel. Instead of slaving over a word count each day, I’m working against the clock: average 30 minutes a day in front of my computer, working on editing. And in truth, it’s not going too badly. Here’s the update:

Day 1: Nothing

Day 2: 1 hour

Day 3: 30 minutes

Day 4: 1 hour

Day 5: Nothing

Day 6: Nothing

Day 7: Nothing

Day 8: 4 hours

Day 9: 1.5 hours

My friend Nicole and I headed to my parents cabin for the weekend (days 7-9). Arriving on Friday, we were too tired to write and saved all our energy for Saturday (8) and then headed home on Sunday (9). I’d been slacking earlier in the week because I had a grad school assignment due, but I was able to make it up (obviously because I’m so awesome).

So, as a rebel, how am I looking? I’ve been using the manuscript I wrote last November and trying to give it some more life. I don’t really like this story, to be honest, and it feels flat to me. I’m adding dept to the characters and putting in back story that I decided 40,000 words in needed to exist last time around. It’s time to fix my mistakes. The scene I alluded to and then forgot to write? Adding it! The character that appears out of no where 2/3 of the way in? Entering some foreshadowing! Hopefully I can find my passion for this book but so far, nothing. I promised myself I’d give it one more try before it goes in a drawer as a best effort and it’s looking like it might sit there. That is, until I’m crazy famous one day and they’ll publish anything that’s ever been saved on my computer. I’m still waiting for that day.

How’s your NaNo? Are you traditional or a rebel like me? I hope you’re enjoying the process as much as I am!

Until next time, write on.
