2020 Reading Goals

16 Jan

With the new year here, it’s time to start thinking about bookish goals for 2020. I’ve kept it simple over the past few years and that’s worked best for me. It allows me to have fun with my book clubs and pick a few books that I’m interested in and want to read at the same time. Simple is usually better, right?

Goal: Complete the 2020 When Are You Reading? Challenge

I’d be a terrible challenge host if I didn’t participate in my own challenge, wouldn’t I? I host this challenge annually and I love it. It’s a 12-book challenge to read one book in each of 12 time periods. You can read more about it here. I adore this challenge because it involves one of my favorite genres: historical fiction. It pushes me to find fiction from less popular time periods and exposes me to times I don’t know as much about.

Goal: Read 55 books.

The ever-present Goodreads goal. I like this one for its simplicity. It’s just a number, so read that many books. Easy enough. But when I get bogged down in long books or I’m five off with two weeks to go, it’s a lot harder than it sounds. You can check my progress here. It’s always a good time.

I don’t have a ton of personal goals this year. My biggest one is completing Triational Age Group National Championships in August, but I don’t have a specific time goal in mind. I’m just excited to go and participate and maybe see some big names that I look up to. That will be my focus race this year and I’m looking forward to it!

Do you have any reading or personal goals for 2020? If you’re looking for something to push yourself, consider giving my challenge¬† a try.

Until next time, write on.

My 2018 Challenges

16 Jan

Hello! I know I’m getting late into January and I haven’t yet posted about the reading challenges I’m going to take on in 2018. How negligent of me. I’ll fix that.

The first is the 2018 When Are You Reading? Challenge. This is a challenge I host and I’m on my fifth year and loving it. The challenge has been well streamlined now and I think it’s safe to say participants have enjoyed it a lot! The challenge is to read books that are set or written in 12 different time periods ranging from Pre-1500 to the future. I’ve already knocked two off the list (#winning) and I usually finish about 10 of these without trying each year. If you want to join, let me know! I’ll add you to the participants’ list. If you want to see how I’m doing, I track my progress here.

My second challenge is my Goodreads challenge for the year. In 2017 I challenged myself to 50 books and came in at 53. I’m going to push that just a little bit more this year and strive for 55. I may have to read some shorter ones toward the end of the year if it looks like I’ll be short, but I’m going to really focus on it this year.

I told you all about some personal goals in 2017 and you were all so great at encouraging me to complete them! Here are my non-reading goals for 2018:

  • Graduate! And keep my 4.0.
  • Travel to Europe with my husband
  • Complete a race per month and try to find new races in different parts of the state. (One of my long-term goals is to do a race in every county in Michigan’s lower peninsula.)
  • Finish a 2018 Weather Blanket

I’m going to stop there before I’m tempted to go on further. I’m very goal-driven so this can become an issue if I set too many.

What are you reading goals? Any personal goals you want to share?

Until next time, write on.

My 2017 Reading Challenges

9 Jan

2017 is going to be a big year for me! In addition to reading, I have a few other goals I’m going to reach for. These including getting through 3 more semesters of grad school and keeping my 4.0 GPA, continuing to knit blankets for my relatives and friends as they welcome babies into the world, running/racing in one event each month (triathlons, running, and open water swimming (new to me)), and getting my novel out to some generous friends who agreed to beta read for me. Whew! I think I can squeeze in a few reading challenges, don’t you?

Challenge #1: When Are You Reading?

Maybe this is unfair because I host this challenge so, of course, I’m going to participate! The challenge is to read books that fit into each of 12 time periods. The book can be written during or take place in the time periods. It’s my fourth year doing this challenge and I’m pumped. Let me know if you want to join in!

Challenge #2: Goodreads Challenge of 50 Books

I lowered my goal last year to 45 books. I wasn’t sure if my shorter commute would hinder my reading (only a bit) and I wanted to tackle some long books (I did). This year, I’m going back up to 50. I managed 52 in 2016 and I think I can do it again for 2017. Besides, with my running goals, I’ll be listening to a lot of audiobooks this coming year.

How about you? What are your reading goals for 2017? Are you doing any challenges?

Until next time, write on.

My 2015 Challenges

7 Jan

I’ve decided to only do two challenges this year. With the Read Along With Me events I host along with hosting my own challenge, I think this will be enough. And I’m bad at biting off more than I can chew. With school on my plate now, I don’t want to over-commit. And I like being able to read whatever I want. Anyway.

2015 When Are You Reading Challenge?

I host this one! It’s a challenge to read a book from each of 12 different time periods. If you’re a fan of historical fiction like myself, this is perfect for getting yourself to read something other than WWII novels or stories about English kings. I loved doing it last year and I’m excited to do it again.

I know everyone does it, but I might as well put it here. I wanted to read 35 last year and came back at 62. This year, I’m going for 50. We’ll see what happens! I think I’ve got this one.

I have some other personal reading goals. I want to finish one book in Spanish and I’ve already begun La Sombra del Viento so that will likely be the one. I’m also hoping to make a dent in some of the books on my TBR that aren’t in my personal collection and use the library a bit more. I hope I can do that.

In non-reading news, I have an athletic goal for myself this year. I want to finish two sprint triathlons (again) and run a 10K this year. I’ll get to that half-Ironman one day, just you wait and see!

What are your reading goals? What are your 2015 goals? Leave a comment and let me know!
