My 2018 Challenges

16 Jan

Hello! I know I’m getting late into January and I haven’t yet posted about the reading challenges I’m going to take on in 2018. How negligent of me. I’ll fix that.

The first is the 2018 When Are You Reading? Challenge. This is a challenge I host and I’m on my fifth year and loving it. The challenge has been well streamlined now and I think it’s safe to say participants have enjoyed it a lot! The challenge is to read books that are set or written in 12 different time periods ranging from Pre-1500 to the future. I’ve already knocked two off the list (#winning) and I usually finish about 10 of these without trying each year. If you want to join, let me know! I’ll add you to the participants’ list. If you want to see how I’m doing, I track my progress here.

My second challenge is my Goodreads challenge for the year. In 2017 I challenged myself to 50 books and came in at 53. I’m going to push that just a little bit more this year and strive for 55. I may have to read some shorter ones toward the end of the year if it looks like I’ll be short, but I’m going to really focus on it this year.

I told you all about some personal goals in 2017 and you were all so great at encouraging me to complete them! Here are my non-reading goals for 2018:

  • Graduate! And keep my 4.0.
  • Travel to Europe with my husband
  • Complete a race per month and try to find new races in different parts of the state. (One of my long-term goals is to do a race in every county in Michigan’s lower peninsula.)
  • Finish a 2018 Weather Blanket

I’m going to stop there before I’m tempted to go on further. I’m very goal-driven so this can become an issue if I set too many.

What are you reading goals? Any personal goals you want to share?

Until next time, write on.

My 2016 Reading Challenges

11 Jan

I’m not one of those book bloggers who signs up for a million challenges so if you’re looking for that post, close this now. I get a lot of my books dictated to me by my book club, about 21 of those I read a year come from this. The others are mostly audiobooks and a few from my ever-growing shelf. I do enjoy a challenge of picking those books that are in my control and trying to expand my horizons. Thusly, I’ve chosen two challenges; one to push my reading and one to push my horizons.

Challenge 1: Goodreads reading challenge of 45 books in 2016.

I challenged myself to 50 books in 2015 and came in at 57. Not bad. However, for half of the year, I had 90 minutes of commute daily when I would listen to audiobooks. That has come down to 20 minutes. It makes for a lot happier worker, but a lot less audio┬álistening. I think decreasing my goal number is realistic because of this change. I suspect I’ll still make it, but I don’t want to push myself too hard. I want to be able to enjoy my books in December next year.

I host this one because I enjoy it more and more each year. The challenge is to read a book from 12 different time periods. You can find the time periods defined on the linked page. It’s not exactly a historical fiction challenge because reading books published in the time period count toward fulfillment and one of the time periods is ‘the future.’ I’ve enjoyed reading books on my shelf from the 1600s that I probably would have pushed off a bit longer if not for the challenge. I’m excited for year 3 and loving the image my husband created for this year. Isn’t it great? Let me know if you’re interested in participating, I’d love to have more people on the journey with me.

What are your challenges this year? What boundaries are you pushing with your choices? I’d love to discuss this with you in the comments below.

Until next time, write on.

My 2015 Challenges

7 Jan

I’ve decided to only do two challenges this year. With the Read Along With Me events I host along with hosting my own challenge, I think this will be enough. And I’m bad at biting off more than I can chew. With school on my plate now, I don’t want to over-commit. And I like being able to read whatever I want. Anyway.

2015 When Are You Reading Challenge?

I host this one! It’s a challenge to read a book from each of 12 different time periods. If you’re a fan of historical fiction like myself, this is perfect for getting yourself to read something other than WWII novels or stories about English kings. I loved doing it last year and I’m excited to do it again.

I know everyone does it, but I might as well put it here. I wanted to read 35 last year and came back at 62. This year, I’m going for 50. We’ll see what happens! I think I’ve got this one.

I have some other personal reading goals. I want to finish one book in Spanish and I’ve already begun La Sombra del Viento so that will likely be the one. I’m also hoping to make a dent in some of the books on my TBR that aren’t in my personal collection and use the library a bit more. I hope I can do that.

In non-reading news, I have an athletic goal for myself this year. I want to finish two sprint triathlons (again) and run a 10K this year. I’ll get to that half-Ironman one day, just you wait and see!

What are your reading goals? What are your 2015 goals? Leave a comment and let me know!
