21 Nov

Welcome to WWW Wednesday! This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived here on Taking on a World of Words. Just answer the three questions below and leave a link to your post in the comments for others to look at. No blog? No problem! Just leave a comment with your responses. Please, take some time to visit the other participants and see what others are reading. So, let’s get to it!IMG_1384-0

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Note: For users of Blogspot blogs, I’m unable to comment on your posts as a WordPress blogger unless you’ve enabled Name/URL comments. This is a known WordPress/Blogspot issue. Please consider enabling this to participate more fully in the community.

Currently reading: I made small progress with The Poe Shadow by Matthew Pearl and I think I’ll devote a little more time to it, but I might put it aside again soon. Honestly, it’s failing to grasp me and I can tell already that this will be a Two or Three Star book for me. It’s just not going anywhere.
I really dropped off my reading of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson after moving so far with it last week. I’ve had busy lunches at work and not a lot of time outside to read it. I have to finish by the end of the year and I know I’ll make that though it may be a bit closer than I’d anticipated.
I’m already a third of the way through The Gilded Hour by Sara Donati. It’s hard not to think that I could have listened to a normal-length book in this same time. I’ll be on this one for a while, to be sure.
I’m enjoying People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks though I no longer think it will be my 1600s book for When Are You Reading? The timeline isn’t firmly set then and I want to get a book that better fits the period.

Recently finished: I wrapped up The Nick Adams Stories by Ernest Hemingway late last week. I’m not a bit fan of short story collections but I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. Nick is very much like Hemingway, as are many of his characters, but I enjoyed reading about his time in Northern Michigan. I posted a review Monday so please check that out for more opinions. I gave it Three out of Five Stars.

I posted a review of Old School by Tobias Wolff last week. I liked this one a lot and it reminded me of some other books I’ve read and enjoyed before. I gave it Four out of Five Stars.

Reading Next: I have a bit of freedom here at the end of the year as my book clubs take time off for us to be with our families. I’ll probably start on the January book to get it out of the way. Our next one is Before the Fall by Noah Hawley. As is my preferred method of reading, I know nothing about this one and I’ll just hope for the best.

Leave a comment with your link and a comment (if you’re so inclined). Take a look at the other participant links in the comments and look at what others are reading.

Have any opinions on these choices?

Until next time, write on.

Interesting books. I’m curious about People of the Book and Before the Fall. Here’s MY WWW POST

I’m enjoying People of the Book so far. It’s an interesting structure. Happy reading!

You’ve reminded me that I have a copy of Before the Fall in my TBR pile but I suspect you’ll get round to reading it before I do. Sorry to hear The Poe Shadow isn’t gripping you as you hoped. Maybe explains some of the mixed reviews. I have it in my wishlist but as that contains an awful lot of books it would be encouraging to remove one!

    Here’s my WWW link: https://whatcathyreadnext.wordpress.com/2018/11/21/www-wednesdays-21st-november-18/

    • Sam November 21, 2018 at 12:20 PM #

I’m pushing to get it finished in the near future so I can write a full review. So far I think it could be shorter. Happy reading!

Pity about The Poe Shadow. People of the Book and Before the Fall both books intrigue me. Here’s my WWW – https://whisperingstories.com/wednesday-reading-21st-november-2018/

It will feel so good just to get it done haha. Happy reading!

I thought I had Before the Fall on my TBR, but I think it must be something with a similar cover. The vertical text looks very familiar but I definitely haven’t read that blurb before!

WordPress hasn’t been playing nice with me tonight but I do finally have a post to share: https://keysandopenmind.wordpress.com/2018/11/21/www-wednesday-21-november-2018-2/

    • Sam November 21, 2018 at 12:22 PM #

It’s still early in my time zone! Sometimes covers start to run together haha. Happy reading!

A shame that The Poe Shadow is not doing it for you! I am reading The Museum of Extraordinary Things at the moment and I am not quite loving it, but not disliking it enough to DNF…

    • Sam November 21, 2018 at 12:23 PM #

I felt the same way about that one. I stopped reading Hoffman after it. Museum was my second try and she’s not for me. Happy reading!

Glad I am not the only one! I can appreciate it, but it’s not the kind of book I could love… I don’t think I would pick up another of her books in a hurry!

I don’t think I’ve ever picked up a book I know nothing about. I tend to be quite obsessive about reading the blurb, checking reviews etc It does seem like it could lead to some interesting and unexpected reading experiences. Out of curiosity, if you don’t know what it’s about how do you pick? Is it based on recommendations?
    Here’s my WWW https://iwuvbooks.wordpress.com/2018/11/21/www-wednesday-21st-november-2018/

    • Sam November 21, 2018 at 12:25 PM #

Recommendation is a big one. Award winners, too. And a lot of book club picks. Sometimes a title will get me, or a favorite author. Or an author I’m
told us similar to one I like. There are a number of ways and I never run short of books. Happy reading!

I wish you good luck in finding a suitable 1600s book in time. Are you no longer going to go for a Shakespeare play like you mentioned in another post?

    • Sam November 21, 2018 at 12:26 PM #

I’m still up on the air. I found a Shakespeare but I’ve had a few solid recommendations as well. Happy reading!

Getting ahead on a book club book? For January?! I’m impressed! I still have to start the book that my book club is discussing on Monday (thankfully it’s only the first half, but still)!😀

Here’s the link to my WWW Wednesday post:

It’s 900 pages so I felt I needed to get a bit ahead haha. Thats not one I want to get behind on. Happy reading!

I’m currently reading ;- “If Cats Disappeared From The World” by Genki Kawamura, I think I’m enjoying it, comfortable style, simple story but I have cried a couple of times and think it is one that will keep coming back to me when I finish; “Beyond A Boundary” by CLR James, fantastic writer and thinker and the greatest book on any sport (broadly, it is a sports book but so much more) there is. I’m reading “Finn Family Mommintroll” by Tove Jansson to my kids

What I’ve just read:- “Reasons To Stay Alive” by Matt Haig, very readable and positive book which I think helped, in someway.

What I’m reading next:- “White Hunger” by Aki Ollikaren, sounds fascinating, about a famine in Finland.

    • Sam November 22, 2018 at 12:53 PM #

I’ve never heard of these. A famine in Finland sounds terrible. Happy reading!
