Book Review: Malorie by Josh Malerman (4/5)

8 Aug

I made no secret of my love for Bird Box. Malerman is local to the Detroit area and I found a virtual event last year to hear him speak about his books and discovered that he was publishing a sequel, Malorie. I was pumped! I’ve made good progress in ebooks lately so I was excited to pick this one up and surprised myself with how fast I sped through it.

A House at the Bottom of a Lake

Summary from Amazon:

Twelve years after Malorie and her children rowed up the river to safety, a blindfold is still the only thing that stands between sanity and madness. One glimpse of the creatures that stalk the world will drive a person to unspeakable violence.

There remains no explanation. No solution.

All Malorie can do is survive – and impart her fierce will to do so on her children. Don’t get lazy, she tells them. Don’t take off your blindfold. And don’t look.

But then comes what feels like impossible news. And with it, the first time Malorie has allowed herself to hope.

Someone very dear to her, someone she believed dead, may be alive.

Malorie has already lost so much: her sister, a house full of people who meant everything, and any chance at an ordinary life. But getting her life back means returning to a world full of unknowable horrors – and risking the lives of her children again.

Because the creatures are not the only thing Malorie fears: There are the people who claim to have caught and experimented on the creatures. Murmerings of monstrous inventions and dangerous new ideas. And rumors that the creatures themselves have changed into something even more frightening.

Malorie has a harrowing choice to make: to live by the rules of survival that have served her so well, or to venture into the darkness and reach for hope once more.

It was so hard not to picture Sandra Bullock when reading this. She was an amazing Malorie in the movie. I felt like this story was very consistent with the first book. It takes place only a short time after the first book ends and pushes the characters into another tense situation. The world they were in was so dangerous that it was hard to think there was a happy ending to the first book. The characters had hope, but it was so fragile. I liked where this one went. I thought it was a realistic way for the world to develop. The division between those who were surviving, thriving, and rebelling was stark and felt real to me.

Reading this one as a mother, I can see why Malorie is as nervous and conservative as she is. The people who we see portrayed as rebels don’t have children from what we know. The burden of keeping another person alive has crushed Malorie into being a different person than she was before the Creatures showed up. She’s lost her identity because she can’t relax and get it back. Her survival mode instincts are strong.

I grew to love Olympia. She’s torn between her deep love for her mother and her connection with her brother. One wants to hold close and the other push away. The revelations about her at the end were heartbreaking and made her my favorite character. I was able to think back through the story and trace times that I could have figured out her secrets, but they were artfully subtle and made for a great reveal.

I related to Malorie’s protective nature over her kids. I would do anything for my Baby and I know who I’ve been since they were born is different than the person I was before. Having a Baby during COVID is different than Malorie’s situation, but I was able to draw some parallels in the precautions I had to take and my distrust of strangers who might inadvertently harm my baby. Mama Bear instincts are strong.

The train was an amazing part of the story. The details of how it got going were really fun and knowing Michigan geography as well as I do, I could picture it so easily. I loved the visual and the appeal of a blind train. It was so original and so fun to read.

Some spoilers here about my least favorite part so skip to the next paragraph to avoid those. I thought the ending was a bit too clean. Tom’s invention working right away and Malorie’s father being in Indian River seemed to clean up the story a little too fast. I felt it would be more realistic if the glasses didn’t work for everyone or they left and were able to find her father further on the rail line.

Parent-child relationships are complicated at best. In the world Malorie lives in, they’re insane. She’s had to sacrifice so much of herself to keep Tom and Olympia alive that she doesn’t recognize herself anymore. Tom is so resentful of how protective Malorie is that he doesn’t recognize the safety she provides. Now that I have a kiddo, I can see how they’ve changed me and how I’m not the version of myself I was when I got pregnant. I can also see their little personality flourishing and how, even now, they don’t want me being around and helping or keeping them safe when they want to explore and learn. And we don’t have creatures to worry about.

Writer’s Takeaway: I think Malerman was smart to revisit Malorie. It might seem like a cash grab, I know. I did listen to a talk he gave during the lockdown where he said he wrote this book because he couldn’t get Malorie out of his head and wanted to tell more of her story. Bird Box ended with a happier state than it began, but it was still not a goods state of the world. This book wrapped that up better, even if I did have some issues with it as stated above. I think he’d be hard pressed for a third book, but this second was a nice way of ending things.

An enjoyable read that I sped through. Four out of Five Stars.

This book fulfills the ‘Future’ time period of the When Are You Reading? Challenge.

Currently reading: I’m still moving forward in Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton though I’ve slowed down for sure. I know this story so well that I’m not motivated to find out what comes next which I think is keeping me from pushing forward as fast as I would with a new read.
I made some pretty good progress in Dollface by Renée Rosen. I’m about 3/4 done now so I’m hoping this one wraps up soon and I’ll get to a new audiobook shortly!
I started Soldiers’ Pay by William Faulkner as an ebook. I’m a little hesitant to dive into this one because I remember not being a huge fan of Faulkner in high school. Though I think knowing there was a project at the end deterred me from enjoying it. I’m not far in now and so far, it seems a little dense to be reading while the Baby is falling asleep, but we’ll see if that changes.

Recently finished: I flew through Malorie by Josh Malerman much faster than I expected to! It was a thrilling pace and I enjoyed a lot about this book. Malerman has been knocking it out of the park for me this year and I’m loving that. I’m working on the review still. I gave it Four out of Five Stars

I was able to post my review of Shades of Magic: The Steel Prince by V.E. Schwab and illustrated by Andrea Olimpieri! I’m not great at reading and reviewing graphic novels so this was a bit of a challenge, but I still enjoyed it. I gave the series Three out of Five Stars.

Reading next:
My next audiobook is going to be Vessel by Lisa A. Nichols. It’s been a bit since I’ve read anything in space so I’m looking forward to this one!

44510181Currently reading: I made a little progress with Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton but with a sick Baby at home, I’ve been collapsing into bed at night instead of reading before I shut off the light. Hopefully, things will turn around and they’ll be on the mend and I’ll be back to reading.
I’ve been keeping a good pace with Dollface by Renée Rosen. I’ll be on this one for a while, but it’s not going to be here forever. I’m hoping once my partner is fully recovered, I can run more and it will move faster.
I picked up Malorie by Josh Malerman a little sooner than I thought I would. It was a struggle to read a comic while holding the baby, so I picked this up to have something where it was easier to change font size. It’s a good adventure so far. I’ll see if I can keep up the pace!

91m+9RkhGfL

Recently finished: I did wrap up Shades of Magic: The Steel Prince by V.E. Schwab and illustrated by Andrea Olimpieri! I enjoyed the backstory of Maxim and the adventure in this book, but I’m still not sure comics are a format for me. I tend to read the text and turn the page without really looking at the art enough. I’m not good at slowing down and appreciating that much. I’m a bit backed up on reviews but I know I’ll get to this one soon!

I was also able to post my review of Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling). I absolutely loved it and gave it Five out of Five stars. Please pop over and read my thoughts!

51mXdAaJ+lLReading next: It’s hard to guess what I’ll need next, an ebook or an audiobook. If it’s an ebook, I’ll probably pick up Soldiers’ Pay by William Faulkner. I’ve had this on my list for a while and while I own a physical copy, I’m likely to get to an ebook sooner.
If it’s an audiobook, I’m likely to go for Vessel by Lisa A. Nichols. I’ve had this on my list or ages so it would be great to finally knock it out!

91m+9RkhGfLCurrently reading: Because of a push to finish other books, I didn’t make much progress in Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton. I’m hoping to get back to it a bit more now. I love this story and it’s helping me practice some new vocabulary and utilize some language skills I haven’t had to use for a while.
I made a respectable amount of progress in Dollface by Renée Rosen. Some of the book has been predictable, which is a bit of a shame, but I’m still enjoying the setting and some of the characters. I hope I can keep pushing forward in this one.
I was able to start Shades of Magic: The Steel Prince by V.E. Schwab and illustrated by Andrea Olimpieri. Reading a comic on my phone hasn’t been as hard as I thought! Yes, it’s a bit of pinching and zooming, but it’s still very doable while rocking a baby to sleep. I believe there are three volumes out and I’m hoping to read all three before I write a review.

Recently finished: I stayed up way later than I should have to finish Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling). It was hard to concentrate at work one day with this hanging over my head so I figured I’d be better of with a late night to wrap it up and I’m glad I did in the end. It was a great ending. I’ll have a lot more to say in a review but I’m not sure how soon that will be up. I hope soon! I gave the book Five out of Five Stars.

44510181Reading next: It’s crazy to think I’ll need another ebook so soon, but I’m flying through this comic! I think I’ll pick up another Josh Malerman book next, Malorie. I know I just read one of his books, but I had a lot on my TBR and I feel like I’m flying through it lately! Just got to keep rolling.

Challenge Update, Second Quarter 2022

5 Jul

Quarterly is the plan moving forward. I feel like I need that long to finish a book sometimes! You can look at my progress at any time on my challenge page.

Books finished in April, May, and June:

The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson (2/5)
Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati (3/5)
A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman (4/5)
A True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Caray (3/5)
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald by J.K. Rowling (3/5)

I’ve got a great mix of audio, digital, and physical books here! It’s been a while since I’ve had that so I’m very thankful to have time to enjoy books in all formats.

When Are You Reading? Challenge

4/12
It didn’t help that I read three books in the 1800s this quarter. I’m not confident I’ll get this one this time around. I’ll try, but I’ll have to be super intentional with my book selections and I’m not sure I’ll enjoy it so much if I do. I’d rather enjoy my reading while it’s so limited rather than read to meet a goal.

Goodreads Challenge

7/15
Oh my goodness, I’m on track! I thought I was irrecoverably behind but finishing so many books this last week has put me on track. I couldn’t be happier!

Book of the Quarter

I’m going to pick A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman for my book this quarter. I enjoyed the suspense of the book and I read it quickly. I don’t read many novellas so it was a nice treat to find one that I liked so much as well.

Added to my TBR

I blew my list up a bit this quarter, up to 44. This tends to happen to me in the summer. My library hooked me up with a Summer Reading service that gives you free audiobooks. I don’t download all of them, but some I can’t resist!

  • Can I Say // Travis Barker. How did I not know such an iconic musician had a memoir? My husband alerted me so I had to add it.
  • This Book Betrays my Brother // Kagiso Lesego Molope. One of the summer audiobooks. I’m trying to read more stories based outside the US so this appealed to me.
  • Under the Banner of Heaven // Jon Krakauer. I couldn’t resist another Krakauer book of real life things that blow you mind!
  • A Brief History of Fascist Lies // Federico Finchelstein. A little non-fiction is always appealing. Looking forward to learning something with this one.
  • Paradise // Laura Maria Censabella. I liked the premise of this one, involving a good teacher-student relationship. Looking forward to the audio!
  • The Family Outing // Jessi Hempel. This is a bit of a story. I wrote a review for an essay collection called Knitting Yarns a few years ago. In the review, I mentioned I enjoyed an essay by Hempel and was disappointed to see they didn’t have any novels. Hempel found my review and reached out to thank me and let me know their book is coming out this fall! So excited to support.
  • Bacchanal // Veronica G. Henry. Another audiobook. I was feeling the need for some fantasy!
  • Striking Distance // Sarah Rees Brennan. I like the idea of a book about a non-mainstream sport like fencing. Sounded like a fun ride!

How are your challenges going? I’m not flying through the year, but I’m making it despite some major life adjustments. If you’re interested in the When Are You Reading? Challenge for 2022, I’m hosting again so you can click here to learn more and let me know if you want in.

Book Review: A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman (4/5)

28 Jun

I must have added this book to my list after enjoying Bird Box so thoroughly. Malerman is quite prolific and I was glad to find a quick story to enjoy. This was perfect to pick up on my phone as I rocked the baby to sleep. Though having a horror story and reading it in the dark might not be the best combination.

A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman

Other books by Malerman reviewed on this blog:

Bird Box

Summary from Amazon:

The story begins: young lovers, anxious to connect, agree to a first date, thinking outside of the box.

At seventeen years old, James and Amelia can feel the rest of their lives beginning. They have got this summer and this summer alone to experience the extraordinary.

But they didn’t expect to find it in a house at the bottom of a lake.

The house is cold and dark, but it’s also their own.

Caution be damned, until being carefree becomes dangerous. For the teens must decide: swim deeper into the house—all the while falling deeper in love?

Whatever they do, they will never be able to turn their backs on what they discovered together. And what they learned:

Just because a house is empty, doesn’t mean nobody’s home.

Again, Malerman has a lovely slow burn to his stories. This didn’t feel like a horror story at first but you could tell something was brewing. It didn’t take long for it to start to feel creepy and strange, but nothing had me squirming until about 25% in when I was freaked out! Amelia and James’ story was really fun to follow and I enjoyed how their relationship changed with the house. You knew something was coming but it took time to figure out what.

Amelia and James seemed real to me. They felt like teenagers and I got the feeling they could even be here in my native Michigan (also native to the author). The only part that seemed a bit off was how quickly they acquired SCUBA gear and became proficient. It seemed a bit convenient but understandably important to the story.

I liked James best. He seemed the most level headed of the two. Especially as time went on and he started to question what was happening. Amelia was so engrossed in their experiences and enthralled and she didn’t want to know why or how, but James started to see through it.

The young love part of their story was easy to relate to and I think many people experience it to some degree in their youth. You questioned if they were in love with each other, the house, or novelty. At first, it can be hard to tell. A summer fling is a common story, but one that involves a mystical house is way more fun.

I enjoyed the middle of the book as they were exploring the house most and were learning the limits of what they could explore and experience. You weren’t sure when things were going to turn bad, but you knew they would. The tension was wonderful and kept me reading fast.

I wanted one more chapter at the end, just to learn a little bit more about what was happening. I guess that’s part of the suspense and tension, that it ended when it did. I appreciated the story and how in a sense it didn’t end even though I didn’t know what happened next. I swiped to the next screen expecting just a paragraph more and felt a tinge of disappointment.

I’m not sure I can identify too many themes in this one besides the young love I mentioned before. Amelia and James experienced something outside the realm of what one can expect to experience that we can’t judge their reactions against our own. I don’t know what I’d do if I found a house at the bottom of a lake. I’d probably write a book about it.

Writer’s Takeaway: The tension built slowly in this book. In a small number of pages, Malerman gave us a great sense that something was amiss and was about to go wrong. While I don’t write in this genre, all stories build to a climax and keeping the story learning forward, pushing to that ending, is a great skill to have. I want to keep reading Malerman stories and I have another on my list I’m itching for now.

A great quick read that kept me on the edge of my seat. Four out of Five Stars

Currently reading: This has been a really great week! I made some progress in True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey, mostly because I’m really determined to finish it soon. Hopefully I will, but it’s still a matter of finding some time to read before bed which isn’t always an option right now.
I started two new titles this week! The first is Into White by Randi Pink. This is a free audiobook I picked up a few years ago. I’m not completely sold on it yet, but I’m making good progress. I’m afraid it’s going to feel a little heavy handed at the end which may change how I feel about it.
I also started Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling. This is my ebook right now. I’m hoping it reads quickly, as those are the best types of ebooks. I’ve found time to read while I nurse my baby so we’ll see how long that holds up until they figure out what I’m doing.

51FUsCV0vdL

Recently finished: I wrapped up Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati! This was a monster of an audiobook so I’m so glad to say I’ve finished it. I’m working on a review, hopefully for next week.
I finished an ebook! Can you believe it? I wrapped up A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman in the middle of the night when Little One woke up and just needed to be held for a bit. Reading this horror story in the middle of the night might not have been one of my best ideas, but I avoided nightmares so I’m still calling it a win.

51I9OngSemL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Reading next: I keep looking at Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton on my shelf because I really want to read it. It’s helping keep me motivated to move through my books.

Currently reading: I read about three pages from True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey which is the most I’ve read in a while, sadly. I’m not sure why physical book time has dropped from my routine. I’ll see if I can make it a priority again this week and make some movement.
I’ve got two hours left Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. Strangely, that doesn’t feel like a lot with how long this book is! I’m hoping I can finish it this month.
I’m trying to push myself to pick up A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman more and it seems to be working! It helps that this is such a short book. I’m almost half way through it already!

Recently finished: None this week. However, I’m feeling more optimistic than normal that I can get a book or two here in the next few weeks. We’ll see how I do!

51I9OngSemL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Reading next: Knowing that my next physical book is Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton is pushing me to finish Kelly Gang a bit faster. I’ve been wanting to reread this for ages!

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently reading: No movement in True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey this week. I got food poisonings and have been slow to recover from it. Sleep has been hard for me so reading before I fall asleep has not been a priority.
I got through a pretty good chunk of Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. I haven’t been running much, but I did have a doctor’s appointment that was a fair drive and got me a lot of listening time. So there’s positives to everything, right?
I read a little bit more from A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman. I thought it wasn’t much but with how short this book is, it made a decent impact! I’m curious how fast I’ll get through this one.

Recently finished: Nothing new finished. However, my review of The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson went up on Monday. Go check it out!

51I9OngSemL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Reading next: I’ll grab Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton as a physical book next. Though I’m starting to think I’ll need an audiobook or ebook sooner than a physical one.

Currently reading: I don’t think I read anything in True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey this week. It was a holiday weekend and I spent a lot of time with family and was happy-exhausted to a point I didn’t read. It was a great time!
Similarly, I didn’t listen to much in Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati either. I think I hit 75%. I feel like I’ll finish this one up soon once I can find some time to run again.
I was able to start A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman! This is a really quick read and I’m already 10% done after picking it up twice. I hadn’t realized it was so short which will be a welcome change.

Recently finished: Nothing new finished this week. I’ll have my review of The Girl with Ghost Eyes posted on Monday so be on the look out for that!

51I9OngSemL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Reading next: My plan is still to pick up Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton as soon as I can regularly find time for my physical book again.
