What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently reading: I came up just short on Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel. I made it to almost 90% but the weekend was really busy and I couldn’t make the final push I needed to finish this one off. I’m counting on it being one of my first books finished in 2024 but I’m sad that it’s still on this list.
With the new year here and knowing where I landed on my 2023 challenges, I’m returning to The Puzzler by A.J. Jacobs. I liked having a physical book to read before falling asleep much more than a book on my phone so this one is getting attention now.
I made it to about 1/4 of the way through Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard but I knew it wasn’t going to wrap up before the end of 2023. It’s enjoyable, but not the kind of book where I’ll ignore all my other responsibilities for a few hours to devour it or skip sleep for it. I do plan to finish it but I’ll take a more leisurely approach.

Recently finished: Nothing new this week. I did find time to write a review so you can see my thoughts on All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque which I posted Monday. I gave the book Four out of Five Stars.

Reading next: It’s tough to guess if I’ll need a physical book or audiobook next. It’s going to depend on how much driving I need to do! For a physical book, I got a copy of Más allá de la magia (Beyond the Wand) by Tom Felton that I plan to kick off the year with. I always want to read a book in Spanish and this seems like a fun one to try out!

Currently reading: I made a commendable push with Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel in my days off before the holidays I’m over 2/3 done now, but it doesn’t look like I’ll quite finish. I expect to wrap up in early 2024 so I’ll be ahead on my reading for next year!
No movement with The Puzzler by A.J. Jacobs this week but my hold did renew so I’ll have it to read soon!
I’m just starting to make progress on Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard. I started focusing on this when I finished my physical book but it will be a big push to wrap it up in time for the new year.

Recently finished: I finished a book! I wrapped up All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque earlier this week and it feels so good to have finished something! I was convinced I wouldn’t have time to read during this holiday break so I’m extatic to have done so. Review forthcoming! Probably next year. One small win at a time.

Reading next: I can’t believe it’s finally time to think about a ‘next up’ book. Though I don’t think I’m ready. I’ll wait one more week until I pick something.

Currently reading: I’m convinced I won’t finish Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel before the end of the year. I had some long drives where I thought I’d make good progress and I was only at 50% when it was all over. This one is just too long. I have a few days off with some big cooking projects, but I don’t think it will be enough.
I haven’t opened The Puzzler by A.J. Jacobs yet again. I hope to soon.
My progress with Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard has been slow, too. I’ll push this one next, but I still feel like I’m running out of time.
I made it past half way in All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and I feel like this might be the only book on this list I’m able to finish before the end of the year. I’ve been enjoying the writing a lot.

Recently finished: Nothing this week which isn’t boding well for finishing my reading challenge.

Reading next: Some day I’ll look forward to my next read. But not today.

Currently reading: I’ve been really pushing on Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel and I feel like I haven’t made a dent. 45% done and so much more to go! I’m not enjoying this one very much which is making it difficult to want to pull it up. Does it get better?
Nothing in The Puzzler by A.J. Jacobs this week, just trying to finish my challenges first.
I read a little bit in Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard but I’m not moving very fast. I might have to focus on this one before I get back to Jacobs as well. I should have paced this challenge better, haha.
I’m focusing on All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque most of the time now. It’s an easy read and I’m hoping it goes quickly. So far, so good.

Recently finished: Nothing new finished but I did get my review of The Escape Artist by Brad Meltzer posted. This was a very ‘meh’ read for me. I ended up giving it Three out of Five Stars.

Reading next: Focusing on the present, not the ‘next’ yet. Wish me luck!

Currently reading: I made some OK progress in Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel. I had a few longer drives this past week but I’m still nervous about finishing before the end of the year! it’s going to be tight.
I got my copy of The Puzzler by A.J. Jacobs back from the library, but I’m putting it a little on the backburner so I can prioritize some other books to finish out my reading challenges.
I haven’t moved a lot in Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard and I need to keep it up to finish my challenge! I’m hoping some self-imposed pressure can keep me moving well through it and get it wrapped up in time!
I grabbed a library copy of All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. I feel like this is such a classic yet I’ve never read it. What a good way to fill in my 1900-1919 time period! Looking forward to it.

Recently finished: I wrapped up the very end of The Escape Artist by Brad Meltzer earlier this week. It was OK, not really my genre, but a good book to keep a reading streak going. I hope I can carry that motivation through to finishing these other books!

I was able to post my review of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid on Monday. Please check it out if you’re interested! I ended up giving the book Four out of Five Stars. I just loved the ending!

Reading next: Not focusing on anything new, just trying to finish what’s already in flight. Wish me luck!

Currently reading: There was some good progress while on vacation, and some areas where I made very little progress. I didn’t listen to any of Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel. I’m a bit nervous about finishing this before the end of the year! I’m going to have to make a focus on it.
I had to return The Puzzler by A.J. Jacobs to the library when I got home. Boo! I have a hold on it to try and get it back soon.
I picked up a used copy of The Escape Artist by Brad Meltzer for my trip. I had every intention of leaving it for my sister in law but didn’t have it with me when we parted ways. I’m glad in the end because the video screen for my seat was broken on the flight home and I ended up making good progress in it!
I started a new ebook which I need for my reading challenge. I started reading Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard. It hasn’t completely captured me yet, but I’m still early on!

Recently finished: I did have time to wrap up The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid just as the hold was expiring! I think I beat it by two hours. We’re starting to get back into a routine at home so I’m hoping to I can get a review up soon.

Reading next: No plans right now! I’m sure that will change as I feel like I’m nearing the end of one of my current reads. It just seems so far off right now.

Currently reading: We’re travling this week so I’m drafting this post well in advance and making guesses about where I’ll be! I hope I read some of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid on my phone while in transit. Though wrangling a toddler will make that a lot harder! Fingers crossed I got some relief from my partner and parents.
I probably didn’t get through much of Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel with all the time I’ll be spending with family. I’ll have a lot of ground to cover when we get home!
I opted to leave The Puzzler by A.J. Jacobs at home since it’s a library book and a huge hardcover. I needed to be more economical about what I put in our limited suitcase space and toddler snacks got priority.

Recently finished: I’m gonig to guess there’s nothing here this week. Maybe I’ll have some huge surprise for you when I get back, though!

Reading next: It’s fun to think I might know the answer to this by the time this post goes live, but as of writing it, I have no idea! I’m on an adventure now so I’ll see where it lands me.

Currently reading: I am optimistic I’ll make some good movement in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid over the next two weeks while traveling! Having a book on my phone while I’m on the go is always a saving grace for those down moments that happen out of no where.
I’m trying to be dilligent about getting Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel running while I do chores around the house. It’s a beast of an audiobook so it’s going to take some focus to get through it. I might have some more drives to work in December that will hopefully help me cross the finish line soon!
I grabbed a copy of The Puzzler by A.J. Jacobs from the library and dove right in! I’m a huge Jacobs fan but I usually do audiobooks of his work. Reading this one is a bit of a different experience but I have his voice in my head which is a fun experience.

Recently finished: I was able to wrap up Songs of Willow Frost by Jamie Ford while I was having some lab work done last week (it’s routine, no worries!). I was excited to finish it and the ending honestly wasn’t what I was expecting. It was fun to be surprised until the last page. In a push to get caught up on reviews before I go on vacation, I knocked this one out and posted my review yesterday! I gave it Three out of Five Stars.

I also posted my review of Running with Sherman by Christopher McDougall this past Monday. I’m all caught up for now! I also gave this book Three out of Five Stars though those ratings are a bit different in my mind. Maybe I need to really think about my rating system a bit more.

Reading next: It’s going to be a mystery. We’re heading out on vacation today and my plan is to pick up a paperback that I think I can finish before we come home and leave it with my sister in law. English books can be a challenge to find when you live in a non-English speaking country so I thought she’d appreciate something to read. Hopefully I’m not left with a cliffhanger because of slow reading! Since I’ll be traveling, next week’s post will be pretty blank from me but will give y’all a space to connect with each other. I’ll be back the following week!

Currently reading: I’m making a push to finish Fiction Writer’s Workshop by Josip Novakovich this week. I don’t think it will be too much of a problem; it should be on my ‘recently finished’ list next week. The only issue is that it hasn’t really inspired me to do any additional writing. Oh well, it was worth a try.
I needed a new ebook and found out I could give myself both the books I wanted to pick up next if I tried Chasing Water: Elegy of an Olympian by Anthony Ervin as an ebook. I know it will be a slower read but I also see myself motivated to keep moving forward with it, so maybe it won’t take as long as other ebooks have.
I started a new audiobook that I’m really excited about. Stories of Elders by Veronica Kirin is one I’ve been wanting to read for a while and have been putting off. I know Kirin personally and am good friends with her brother. I heard her speak a while back about this book and I’m sorry I put it off as long as I did. She narrates the audiobook herself which is always fun.

Recently finished: I wrapped up The Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits by Emma Donoghue just in time for our book club meeting on Monday. I’m not a huge fan of short stories so I’m sure that affected my rating of it. I gave it Three out of Five Stars. I’ll have a review up tomorrow.
I also finished It’s All Relative by A.J. Jacobs on audio. I adored hearing the story in Jacobs voice through the audiobook. I’m not sure what project he has coming up next but I’m guessing that it will make for a great book that I’ll love to read. I posted a review yesterday and I gave the book Four out of Five Stars.

I posted my review for The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai on Monday. This was a great read and I’m so glad I was talked into buying a copy by the signage at the story. It was a beautiful story. I gave it Four out of Five Stars.

Reading Next: I can’t wait to pick up The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins as my next physical book. It’s time for some YA dystopian binging and this is the perfect book for it. I hope to have started it by next week.

Book Review: It’s All Relative by A.J. Jacobs (4/5)

9 Jun

I adore A.J. Jacobs. I’ve often said he’s my favorite non-fiction writer. His subjects are well selected and his wit and humor always go over well with me. I’ve had this book on my TBR for a while and was excited to run across an audiobook version of it narrated by Jacobs himself! I sped through this one and had a blast with it.

It’s All Relative: Adventures Up and Down the World’s Family Tree by A.J. Jacobs

Other books by Jacobs reviewed on this blog:

Drop Dead Healthy

Summary from Goodreads:

A.J. Jacobs has received some strange emails over the years, but this note was perhaps the strangest: “You don’t know me, but I’m your eighth cousin. And we have over 80,000 relatives of yours in our database.”

That’s enough family members to fill Madison Square Garden four times over. Who are these people, A.J. wondered, and how do I find them? So began Jacobs’s three-year adventure to help build the biggest family tree in history.

Jacobs’s journey would take him to all seven continents. He drank beer with a US president, found himself singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and unearthed genetic links to Hollywood actresses and real-life scoundrels. After all, we can choose our friends, but not our family.

One of the things I love about Jacobs is how he throws himself into his projects 100%. Whatever the project is, he lives it and it consumes his life. This project was no different. Of course, Jacobs couldn’t develop a hobby in genealogy; he had to try and break the record for the largest family reunion. It’s the steps along the way that Jacobs took that make his story even more fascinating. I loved the small things he brings up, like family rivalries, blended families, and Mila Kunis. These anecdotes bring the story to life in a way that only Jacobs can.

Jacobs was very honest about his family and roots which I loved. It was fun to hear him talk about the gems and bad apples of his family tree. I felt that he may have held back some things that were particularly damming, but was still able to illustrate what he found about his past. He was respectful using pseudonyms for people who didn’t want their details revealed so he could tell real stories and not hurt anyone.

Jacobs always appears as a character in his own stories. He’s not afraid to talk about his own faults and make fun of himself, usually through the eyes of his family. He realizes when he embarrasses his sons or is not a perfect husband to his wife. He sees the times that he falls short of the person he wants to be. I like how honest he is with himself and how much you see him grow through his research.

I tried poking into genealogy once, rather unsuccessfully. I created a Family Search account and I’ve taken the 23 And Me analysis. But it wasn’t something I decided to invest too much time in and that fizzled out. However, I had a really cool moment a few years ago. I was visiting my parents and I got an email from a 23 And Me user who said he thought we could be related and asked me if a list of last names meant anything to me. One was my grandmother’s maiden name. I asked my dad if he knew the name and he recognized that this was the child of one of his cousins. I wrote back and was connected to my dad’s cousin, who is the family historian. We now get annual updates (via Christmas card) about the new relatives my cousin-once-removed has added to our family tree and the family documents she’s been able to find. I’m always shocked by the documents and records she has translated from Danish that show a relative in the 1600s giving birth or being baptized. It’s cool to think about my family members from that long ago.

I liked learning how Jacobs connected people to himself. It was cool to see how we’re all related to Beyonce or Ted Bundy. It made me interested in going onto one of the sites he listed and creating another account. Though I doubt I’ll be able to keep up with it, as happened before, and it will fizzle out.

I found his account of the actual family reunion a bit of a letdown. After building to it the whole book, his description of the day was a bit rushed. I know it must have felt that way to him as well, but I think the chapter could have been twice as long to give us a feeling of the size of the day a bit better. It was a huge accomplishment and it would have been good to see it that way.

Jacobs narrating his own audiobook was great. I loved his humor even more hearing the way it was intentioned to be read straight from his lips. I always like when authors narrate their own non-fiction because I think it gives it a much stronger story-telling element. I hope Jacobs will do this again. I’m almost tempted to listen to some of his backlog if he’s done it before. I always enjoy revisiting his stories.

Family is never simple and Jacobs story shows that. He has examples of family secrets, non-traditional families, fights, and failures. I think a great example is his relative who he was so excited to find out served in the Civil War, only to find out he lasted less than a week in the service. There are great and terrible things in each family. And if you look broadly enough, we’re all one family anyway. So any terrible thing you hear is about your family as is every great thing you hear.

Writer’s Takeaway: Jacobs’ humor is what has always made him a favorite of mine. Even in stressful situations (like arguing with his brother in law), he finds a way to make fun of the situation, to find some humor. It often points toward him, but he’s great at looking for it and finding a way to make you laugh, especially when you might have been cringing otherwise.

A great read with some wonderful Jacobs humor. Four out of Five Stars
