Book Review: The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson (2/5)

6 Jun

This was a book my sister in law got for me for Christmas one year. These books aren’t ones I’ve asked for so it’s always a surprise what the title will be. I decided to tackle this one as an ebook because of it’s availability and that might have been to it’s detriment. I read ebooks very slowly, that’s always been the case with me. But this one was particularly slow. It took me about 10 months.

GhostThe Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson

Summary from Amazon:

It’s the end of the nineteenth century in San Francisco’s Chinatown, and ghost hunters from the Maoshan traditions of Daoism keep malevolent spiritual forces at bay. Li-lin, the daughter of a renowned Daoshi exorcist, is a young widow burdened with yin eyes—the unique ability to see the spirit world. Her spiritual visions and the death of her husband bring shame to Li-lin and her father—and shame is not something this immigrant family can afford.

When a sorcerer cripples her father, terrible plans are set in motion, and only Li-lin can stop them. To aid her are her martial arts and a peachwood sword, her burning paper talismans, and a wisecracking spirit in the form of a human eyeball tucked away in her pocket. Navigating the dangerous alleys and backrooms of a male-dominated Chinatown, Li-lin must confront evil spirits, gangsters, and soulstealers before the sorcerer’s ritual summons an ancient evil that could burn Chinatown to the ground.

At times, I felt this book assumed a lot of knowledge of Daoism and also info-dumped about Daoism. I can’t put my finger on exactly what the right balance would have been, but it felt inauthentic. It was also no surprise to me that the writer wasn’t female because Li-lin’s voice sounded inauthentic as well. Some people can write other genders without issue but unfortunately this wasn’t the case. Overall, it didn’t feel like this was the right story for the author to tell and it left me feeling detached.

The voice for Li-lin felt hollow. She didn’t seem to go deep enough into feelings that should have been triggering, even for someone trying to repress some of her feelings. She also seemed to be very observant and then miss obvious things which was inconsistent. She didn’t give off a very believable vibe. Since she was really the only character and voice we got, it was hard to believe in her.

I didn’t like any of the characters, which made this book hard. Besides Li-lin, we don’t get a lot of characters to latch onto. Her father, the spirit of his eye, and a handful of gang members are the only other characters we meet. None of them are fleshed out very well so it seems silly to say I liked any of them most.

I struggled to relate to Li-lin. The most relatable part about her was her love for her husband but he dies before the book starts which is harder for me to relate to. The magical elements of this book were too far removed from anything I’m familiar with for me to feel like it was the same world I live in.

4unvl994ct5r1d3kto10r3f1fp._SX450_I thought the book was paced well. It kept moving and didn’t seem to have any slow spots. Li-lin was a person of action and she kept pushing forward, even when things were hard. I didn’t put this book down because I was bored at any point.

The ending was rough for me. The big fight scene had a significant death in it which Li-lin seems to brush under the rug. Honestly, I forgot it happened at one point because of a pause in my reading and how little she reacts. That tinged how I felt about the book and I was frustrated as I finished it the rest of the way.

There didn’t seem to be much of a theme or message in this book. Li-lin pushed forward when things were hard but that’s about all I got from it. Maybe my lack of knowledge of late 1800s life in the US Chinatowns is to blame for not picking up on nuances of Li-lin’s struggle, but I’d also hope the author could have highlighted those more if they were relevant.

Writer’s Takeaway: This book focused so much on action that the characters suffered. I was hoping for some insights about the time period and culture and instead I got a kung fu book. For the same reasons that ‘shoot ’em up’ movies aren’t for everyone, this writing isn’t for everyone. I think it could have benefited from some more character development and emotions.

Overall, this fell really flat for me. Two out of Five Stars.

This book fulfilled the 1800-1899 time period of the When Are You Reading? Challenge.

Until next time, write on.

Kelly

Currently reading: This wasn’t a great week for True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. I might have picked it up one night. I’ve been getting better sleep, though! So at least one thing is improving.
I keep making decent progress in Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. I just renewed it for the third time and I’m over 70%! I’m hoping to wrap this one up reasonably soon.

GhostRecently finished: Y’all are never going to believe this. I finished The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson! I read a short chapter while baby was falling asleep and realized I only had one more to go! I finished that a day or two later and I can’t believe I’m finally done with it! I’ll be working on a review, not sure when I’ll be able to finish it and get it posted. I gave the book Two out of Five Stars so I have a lot to process. Maybe by Monday?

51I9OngSemL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Reading next: This means that the next time I find a moment to start an ebook, I’ll be picking up A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman! I’m excited to have this one so close at hand. It seems like it’s a shorter one so that is great for my slow ebook reading.
Hopefully now I can focus on finishing my physical book so I’ll pick up Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton. I’m looking forward to revisiting this story.

Ghost

Currently reading: I might have read a page in The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson, all because I didn’t want to report here that I’d read nothing yet again. I’m so close to the end, I just wish I could carve out time that was good for this.
I was slow in True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey again. Our schedule change is still an adjustment and I’ve prioritized sleep again so less time for reading. I’m still tired so I must not be doing it well.
Again, my only progress has been in Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. I’ve found time to run and I’ve been driving around which are my two biggest chunks of time to listen to this. I never would have guessed I’d make such steady progress on a 26 hour audiobook, but I’m happy with my pace.

Recently finished: One day…

91tzXN8Fp0LReading next: Maybe I’ll start A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman before Halloween.
I hope to find time to pick up Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton soon. I think it will take me a while to read so the sooner I can grab it, the better.

Currently reading: Absolutely nothing in The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson again. We had some big schedule changes last week so I haven’t found a way to fit this into my schedule again yet. Maybe this week as things slow down.
With those big schedule changes, I didn’t have as much time for True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. I’m getting less sleep and reading before bed becomes the first thing to go when that happens.
Surprisingly, I made some decent progress in Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. I’m over half way done now and moving forward well. The story is still slow and dragging a bit, but I’ll press forward.

Recently finished: Nothing seems even close to finished just now. I’ll have to see how the week goes before I’m ready to even guess what will go there.

51I9OngSemL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Reading next: I’d hoped that reading A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman next might motivate me to finish my ebook, but no such luck yet.
I am excited to pick up Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton as my next physical book. I think it will be a slow read for me so it would be good to get to this as soon as I can. I hope that’s not too far off.

Kelly

Currently reading: I’ll get to The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson. I’m not in a rush and it’s just hanging out, so I’m not too worried about this one.
I’ve made some good steps forward with True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. Baby has been going down earlier and sleeping well so I’ve gotten some good reading time in!
Still moving steadily through Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. This one feels like it’s dragging quite a bit so I’m getting a bit frustrated with it at this point, but I’ll carry on.

Recently finished: It sounds crazy, but I think Kelly Gang will be the next one here and I don’t think I’m too far away from that!

51I9OngSemL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Reading next: The plan is still for A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman to be my next ebook.
If I’m right and need a new physical book next, it’s past time for me to do my Spanish book of the year! My amazing husband got me Rebeldes (The Outsiders) by S.E. Hinton. This is one of my all time favorite books so I’m excited to explore it in Spanish.

Ghost

Currently reading: Again, nothing with The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson. I know I’m close to finishing it, but I really have no push to get through to the end.
I’m making steady progress in True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey and I’m picking it up most nights. I’m getting to the point in the story I’m more familiar with so it’s losing some novelty for me but I’m still enjoying the writing.
I’ve gotten to a third of the way through Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. It feels great to be making progress in this chunk of a book. I can tell I’m starting to get some time for myself again which is kind of nice.

Recently finished: Come back later.

91tzXN8Fp0LReading next: I know I’ll eventually have something here that will move to my ‘Currently Reading’ area, but it seems so far away. I hope to pick up A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman next. We’ll see what happens.

Currently reading: I keep forgetting to read The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson when I get time. I’ve been playing Wordle and variants of it to the point of obsession. I should read instead. This is a bad habit.
I keep picking away at True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey and I know I’ll finish it eventually, but it’s still not a priority over sleep. I think I’ve got my ducks in a row so I’m not pushing it.
I keep surprising myself with my progress in Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. I never would have guessed I’d be a quarter through it already! I’m feeling great about this.

Recently finished: I keep trying.

91tzXN8Fp0LReading next: Maybe if I think about how much I want to read A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman, I’ll actually make progress with an ebook. I’ll see if that works this week.

Kelly

Currently reading: I didn’t read anything from The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson this week. I’m not in a rush to finish it, honestly. This one is falling a bit flat for me.
I made a little time for True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. I’m getting to the part of Ned’s life that I’m aware of so it’s fun to see it develop. I might have to watch the movie again after I finish this one. It’s been a while.
I’m making respectable progress in Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. I think the length is motivating me to find more time and keep moving forward more than I normally would!

Recently finished: Nothing this week, but that’s expected. I’m hoping to add something more soon!

91tzXN8Fp0LReading next: If I can ever get myself to read my ebook, I’ll start A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman next. Maybe in time for Halloween?

Ghost

Currently reading: I wasn’t able to open The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson, though I did try! Baby is going through some big changes at their age so I keep looking up parenting advice instead of reading. Who knows if it’s helping.
I read just a little bit from True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey but I have found I’m moving forward slowly. I think I can get it done in a reasonable time frame, but I’m still going to prioritize sleep first.
I’m still on the prologue of Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati. It’s a long prologue so that’s not a bad thing, per say. This is going to be a long haul!

Recently finished: Nothing new this week but I was able to post my review of Tabula Rasa by Ruth Downie on Monday so please to check that out! I gave it Three out of Five Stars. I’m excited for the next in the series!

Currently reading: I managed to read some of The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson and for a minute I thought I might finish it. But that didn’t happen. I’m getting really close, though!
I got through very little of True History of The Kelly Gang by Peter Carey this week. I’ve been really tired and not sleeping well so time to read before bed has gone away. I’m trying to commit to sleeping more so we’ll see if I can make more time!
I started Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati! I’m still on the prologue, but I’ll get there. It’s so fun to start something new.

41JYZlm4QsLRecently finished: I finished Tabula Rasa by Ruth Downie on Saturday! I’m so glad to have finally finished this. I gave it Three out of Five Stars. I hope to write the book review this weekend and have it for you all early next week! It can be hard to find time with the Baby, but I’ll try to sneak away during a nap or pass them off to Dad for a little bit and sneak away.

91tzXN8Fp0LReading next: If I can keep making some progress with my ebook, I should be able to start A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman soon! Remaining optimistic.
